McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act and the Homeless Sub-Grantee Program
Colorado Department of Education links: McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act Homeless Education Subgrantee Programs
The McKinney-Vento Act was enacted to address the numerous barriers homeless children face in obtaining a free, appropriate public education. The Act ensures educational rights and protections for children and youth experiencing homelessness.
TSD also participates in CDE’s Homeless Education Sub-Grantee Program, which funds district programs, initiatives and resources to address the barriers faced by homeless children and youth in accessing and succeeding in school.
The Thompson School District's McKinney Vento Homeless Education Program works with homeless families to ensure immediate enrollment of their children in school. The McKinney Vento Homeless Education Liaison helps arrange transportation to and from a child’s school of origin, ensures that homeless students receive services comparable to those received by housed peers, and identifies and eliminates barriers to school enrollment and attendance.
