Degrees and Certifications:
Mr. Chris Dickerson
Hi, I’m Chris Dickerson and the best way to describe me is as a science nerd who loves nature. I’m looking forward to sharing my knowledge and learning alongside the creative minds of the 7th and 8th grade students here at High Plains, while helping to guide them in exploring their problem solving and critical thinking skills. Before this I spent 11 years teaching a combination of science and special education classes to a variety of student in grades 6-12 at the Waterloo Community School District in Iowa. I am an Iowa native but I love to travel and explore new places; I’ve lived in Iowa, Kentucky, South Carolina, and now Colorado! Living in this area I can’t wait for a chance to explore the mountains when the opportunity arises while I continue teaching the science that I love so much. Beyond school and playing in the great outdoors I can often be found unwinding with a good book and drinking tea, like a proper nerd.
I originally graduated from Western Kentucky University with a BS in Biology and Chemistry and then went back for a BA in Earth Science from the University of Northern Iowa. Eventually I came to realize through experience teaching college lab classes and encouragement from others that I had a skill in explaining scientific concepts and went back to school to earn my teaching certification through Upper Iowa University. I resisted as long as I could but apparently genetics took over and the inevitable occurred, I joined the rest of my family in becoming an educator as well. Now I look back and I can’t imagine any other career being half as satisfying.
