Give Next

  • TSD Schools Welcomes Youth Philanthropic Program, Give Next

Students from the Give Next youth philanthropy program

Give Next is a youth philanthropy program that helps students understand what it means to give of their time, talent, and treasure and is in both Thompson and Poudre school districts. Each Give Next classroom receives $5000 through a donation from generous community donors; students spend the year learning about community issues, identifying a mission that is important to them, learning about and volunteering at local nonprofits, and ultimately awarding grants to nonprofits that align with their mission. Bohemian Foundation manages Give Next, in partnership with the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado, and a community advisory committee. Students fundraise for additional dollars, and 100% of donated funds go to the nonprofits selected to receive grants. This year, 5 schools in the Thompson School District have a Give Next Program at their school; MVHS and LHS plan to add a Give Next program next year and Bohemian Foundation plans to offer Give Next in all Thompson and Poudre schools by 2020.

Berthoud High School recently braved the February 2 snow and cold to spend the day visiting three of the nonprofits who applied for grants related to their mission, which is to provide both immediate relief and long terms solutions for homeless families in Larimer County. Using the FLEX and MAX public transport systems, students met with representatives from the Larimer County Food Bank, KidsPak and FoCo Cafe. Students also spent time volunteering for the Loveland Food Share and brought handmade scarves that were made in the BHS Compassionate Makerspace to FoCo cafe for their Warm Wishes Project. Additionally, students met with representatives from the City of Fort Collins about homelessness there, and finally toured the CSU office of Student Leadership, Involvement and Community Engagement, allowing them to end the day thinking of ways to continue their lives as philanthropists.
