It is astounding to me to realize that I have been an art educator for almost two decades now. I began teaching in a rural farming area in a place that can best be described by its name-- Last Chance, Colorado. It wasn’t exactly a one-room schoolhouse, but for four years I was the only art teacher in a district comprised of one building with approximately 115 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. I taught all thirteen grades each day, every day. I’m sure I learned more than my students did in those first few years. It was often challenging, but it is an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything.
For the last fourteen years I have been fortunate to teach elementary art in the Thompson School District in Loveland and Berthoud. Mary Blair has been my primary school for many years now, but I also teach at Stansberry Elementary and have been at Lincoln, Big T, Monroe, Berthoud El., Centennial, and Truscott, and Winona. Now I see approximately five hundred students a week and I also get to teach and learn with a district full of amazing art educators.
As the fifth generation of a Colorado pioneer family, I am proud to have been born and educated in Colorado. I received my Bachelors in Art from the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo. I obtained my Art Education Endorsement from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley and I finished my Masters in Art with an emphasis in Painting from Adams State University in Alamosa. My last degree has been an important part of my intention to balance my career as art educator with my career as a painter. I primarily paint equine paintings and the occassional plein air landscape.
