    Dear Parents,

Welcome back for the 2017-18 school year!  I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer and spent time Sharpening the Saw.  I had a great summer; my daughter Camille went to a three-week outdoor camp in North Carolina and begins high school, I traveled to Vail/California/Michigan, and we added a new puppy (Walter) to our family.  I also had the opportunity to delve into growing as a leader by attending a Leader In Me Principal Leadership Academy & Tointon Institute for Principal Leadership Development.  I look forward to sharing with you my learnings and how I hope to continue to grow as your Principal.

The 2017-18 school year is an opportunity for Carrie Martin to move forward in our journey in providing the highest quality education for our students, families, and community.  We are coming off a great school year where we saw the attainment of Lighthouse Status, a great Leadership Day, Academic Improvement, and building a culture of collaboration, accountability, and trust.  My hope is to sustain and continue our momentum into this school year.

As in previous years, I would like to focus our work around three priorities.  In an always busy field, it is important for us to highlight what is urgent and important for Carrie Martin.  By prioritizing our work, we can utilize the habits of Being Proactive, Beginning with the End in Mind and Putting First Things First.  A first priority for next year is developing teacher leadership and empowerment at Carrie Martin.  This is my third year as principal and I would like to step back in leading and invite teacher leaders to join me in leading Carrie Martin.  My hope is to highlight the exemplary teaching talent and practices that exist in our building.  I would like to focus on serving and supporting teachers in teaching, learning, and professional growth.  My second priority is to help facilitate the continued implementation of The Leader in Me philosophy.  I hope to continue to strengthen and grow The Leader in Me philosophy in order to prepare all of our students for leadership opportunities of the future.  My third priority is supporting the learning needs of your children by serving as an instructional leader for the Carrie Martin staff.  As a staff, we will be focusing on continued development in the areas of curricular planning, instruction, and assessment of student learning.

I look forward to seeing you on Thursday, August 17th, at our Kindergarten Open House, Ice Cream Social and Back to School Night.  The Kindergarten Open House is from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.  The Ice Cream Social is from 5:00 – 5:30 p.m.  Our Back to School Night is from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.  At 5:30 p.m. parents are welcome to come inside to learn about your teachers and classrooms.  We will have supervision on the playground for all students that would like to play outside.  We will start in the gym for a community welcome and then have two 20-minute rotations (to accommodate parents with siblings) where classroom teachers will conduct grade level overviews.

That is all for now!  See the attached document for our important welcome back to school dates!
