    Choice Enrollment Terminology

The following terminology applies to the Terms and Conditions in the Choice Enrollment Application and Family Dashboard.

    Term Definitions

All fifth and eighth grade students: advancing to the next-level school will be automatically enrolled at their attendance boundary school regardless of current school status. All students should proceed as though they will attend their boundary school until Choice Enrollment notifications are finalized. This includes meeting with their attendance boundary school representatives and registering for classes at their attendance boundary school. After choice enrollment decisions are finalized, students who have been offered and have accepted a seat to a school outside of their attendance boundary will have their enrollments and course requests transferred from their attendance boundary schools to the requested school.

Attendance Boundary: School designated for your student(s) to attend based upon your residential address.
    School locator

BOE Approved Lottery Priorities: JFAB/JFBB-R The following priorities are applied each year in connection with implementation of the lottery:

    1. A student of an active duty inbound military member
    2. A student of a regular Licensed, Classified or Administrative, Professional & Technical (APT) employee, whether they reside inside or outside of the district.
    3. A resident student whose sibling has been in attendance and will be attending their requested school the following year.
    4. A resident student whose sibling has been selected via the lottery to attend the requested school the following year.
    5. A student who currently attends a Dual Language Immersion program that feeds into the school for which choice enrollment is sought.
    6. A student who resides in the District.
    7. A new student who resides outside the District.

Choice Enrollment: All processes that afford a student an opportunity to attend a school other than their attendance boundary school applicable to grades K-12.

Family Dashboard: Secure online site for the Choice Enrollment application processes and monitoring of application status.

Lottery: The electronic random selection process for all Round One Choice Enrollment applications.

Sibling Preference: Legal family member(s) of a current student who is residing in the same residence as their sibling, who will also begin their attendance at the same school and year as the current student. Siblings who do not begin their attendance at the school do not qualify.

Waitlist: The listing of Choice Enrollment applications, after the lottery, that are waiting for an available seat offering. The position number of the waitlist indicates how many applications are ahead of you waiting for an available seat.

    Choice Enrollment Application Process

    • Applications are open to all Colorado K-12 residents wishing to attend a school within the Thompson School District.
    • A Choice Enrollment application is required for any student grades K-12 who wishes to attend a school outside of their attendance boundary. Parents/Guardians complete a separate  application for each school the student wishes to attend.
    • Timelines for the district’s Choice Enrollment process are posted on the Choice Enrollment website.
    • Duplicate student applications for the same school and/or same program are quality checked and will be denied.
    • Completion of an application does NOT guarantee admittance into the requested school as determinations are based on class size capacity.
    • Application status can be monitored via the Family Dashboard
    • All completed applications, received by the Round 1 deadline, will be placed in the lottery.
    • All new applications, received after Round 1, will be added to the bottom of the appropriate school’s existing waitlist in the order the completed application is received and processed.
    • All application status notifications will be viewed via the Family Dashboard, this information will not be provided over the phone or mailed.
    • Parents/Guardians must electronically accept or decline all offered seats by the posted deadline, or offered seats are forfeited.
    • Parents/Guardians can only commit to one school/program. Parents/Guardians cannot enroll their child in a school until the "Accepted" notice has been received and parents/guardians accept the seat offered.
    • Accept seat(s) offered via the Family Dashboard.
    • Once a seat offer is accepted via the Family Dashboard, the requested school staff will contact families to complete enrollment.
    • Failure to register by the first school day of September will forfeit your approved Choice Enrollment seat and the application becomes null and void.
    • If a student attends a school (traditional public, charter, home education program, virtual or private) other than the school of the accepted seat, the approved Choice Enrollment seat is forfeited and the application becomes null and void.
    • In the event that any information is falsified or withheld from the district in connection with the choice enrollment process, any approval for admission and continued enrollment may be immediately withdrawn.
    • It is the responsibility of the parent to keep the school informed of any changes.
    • Applications not chosen due to capacity/class size concerns will be placed on a waitlist.

    EXCEPTIONS to Choice Enrollment:

    • Early Childhood/Preschool students are not included in this process.
    • Students placed in a school by the IEP team, or through an Administrative Placement, are not eligible for this process.

    Lottery

The Choice Enrollment lotteries are conducted by grade level, utilizing the following priorities as authorized by School Board Policy JFAB/JFBB-R. The lottery tiers in Thompson School District are as follows:

    1. A student of an active duty inbound military member.
    2. A student of a regular Licensed, Classified, or Administrative, Professional and Technical (APT) employee, whether they reside inside or outside of the district.
    3. A resident student whose sibling has been in attendance and will be attending their requested school the following year.
    4. A residential student whose sibling has been selected via the lottery to attend the requested school the following year.
    5. A student who currently attends a Dual Language Immersion program that feeds into the school for which choice enrollment is sought.
    6. A student who resides in the District.
    7. A new student who resides outside the District.

    Sibling Preference

Family member(s) of a current student who is residing at the same residence as his/her sibling, who will also begin his/her attendance at the same school during a year in which the current student is attending the school, qualify for sibling preference. Siblings who do not begin their attendance at the school while the current student is attending the school do not qualify for sibling preference.

Twins, triplets or multiples are given one lottery number whereby all siblings are accepted or denied based upon that single lottery number.

A student whose sibling has been offered a seat through the lottery process qualifies for the family preference for the next available seat in the applicable grade level or program. These family preference students must meet the entry requirements.

    Students: District

Children who reside within the Thompson School District Boundary.

    Students: Out-of-District

Students who reside in another school district within the State of Colorado.

    Waitlist

The waitlist is the listing of Choice Enrollment applications, as a result of the lottery, that are waiting for an available seat offering. The position number of the waitlist indicates how many applications are waiting for an available seat. If your student is not offered a seat for the current application school year, your application(s) expire. Waitlisted applications will not roll over to the following school year. A new application will need to be completed for the subsequent year.

    Waitlist position numbers can fluctuate:

    • The number can decrease as students with lower waitlist numbers are offered seats or withdraws an application;
    • The number can increase as students of siblings who are offered seats trigger family preference;
    • The number can increase as inbound active military apply and receive priority in accordance with state statute.

    Seats become available when:

    • A parent/guardian does not submit the electronic acceptance notification by the due date (Please see the complete timeline for due dates)
    • A parent/guardian does not complete the registration paperwork and guidelines in the timeframe set forth by administration

Employee of Thompson School District Applicants

    • Employees must adhere to the application deadlines.
    • New hires and transfers outside of the application window will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
    • Application requires Staff Member’s Name and School/Location.
    • Employee preference in the lottery process is afforded to employees only but is not a guarantee as it is based on capacity and the student meeting all entrance requirements (if applicable).

    Denied Choice Enrollment Appeal Process

Denied applications may be appealed per Board Policy JFBA/JFBB-R

Should a request for Choice Enrollment or Transfer be denied, the student will be advised by the principal that they may appeal the decision by contacting the assigned level director.
