• This year we are excited to bring Battle of the Books back to our school! This will be open to all 5th grade students, who love to read, and talk about what they’ve read. Unfortunately, we are only allowed seven students on a team, so we will be doing a lottery, which will decide who makes up this team.

We will meet once a week, on Tuesdays during lunch, and we’ll discuss the books they've read, and call out important facts and details about these books in a fun, engaging environment. In January, we will battle other schools at the Loveland Public Library, once a week on Thursday nights. The teams that win the competition each week, will move on to the final competition to be held at the beginning of  February.

There is a set list of books that have been selected for the 5th grade level, and I have posted them below. Students may read whichever ones they want, in any order they want. I'm currently trying to get my hands on as many of these books as I can, so I can loan them out to the students. If you happen to have any of these books in your personal collection, and wouldn't mind letting us borrow them through February, that would be a huge help. I am also looking for some volunteers to read a book or two and write a few questions from the story (characters, city names, important events, etc.),  that I could use to help quiz the team, and get them ready for the competition.

Here are the books we are looking for:

    • Selden, George - The Cricket in Times Square
    • Urban, Linda - A Crooked Kind of Perfect
    • Konigsburg, E.L. - From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
    • Karr, Kathleen - The Great Turkey Walk
    • Banks, Lynne Reid - The Indian in the Cupboard
    • Stewart, Trenton Lee - The Mysterious Benedict Society
    • Clements, Andrew - No Talking
    • Peck, Robert Newton - Soup
    • Naylor, Phyllis Reynolds - Shiloh
    • DiCamillo, Katie - The Tale of Despereaux
