Athletic Updates
Dear Thompson School District Families:
We are reaching out today to provide you with information regarding
TSD's middle school athletics schedule. Through work with CDPHE,
Larmier County, and CHSAA we are excited to have an approved variance
for girls' basketball and wrestling starting on Monday, 1/18.
The above message is what the district wanted sent out regarding
middle school athletics, and then schools are to add school specific
things below it. SOOOOO, here is what you need to know about Turner
athletics! I will go sport specific about what you need to know
regarding practice times, game schedules, etc. so you can skip to the
section that is most pertinent to you and your child! All of this is
subject to change, if Larimer drops below Orange again!
Girls Basketball:
-We will start on 1/19 at TMS. The variance is for the 18th, but that
is a holiday, so we are going on the 19th
- We are allowed to have NO MORE than 12 students on each team (6th,
7th and 8th).
-There will NOT be an intramural program this year. We couldn't make
it work as a district with gym space, cleaning requirements, and
coaching requirements. However, in the past we may have kept only 7-10
kids on a team sometimes. This year we will keep as many as we are
allowed to (12 per grade) to keep as many kids playing as possible
- Practice times! For tryout week, if we get more than 12 kids trying
out at any given grade level, we will have to split tryouts into
different time slots. This is why it's IMPERATIVE you get your
paperwork in now. If you turn in paperwork the day of tryouts, your
child might not get to try out because there may not be space for your
child in the gym. Athletic packets and COVID waivers are on the TMS
athletics website. They NEED to be turned in before the first day of
tryouts (1/19). After tryouts, if your child was one of the final 12,
we will practice after school daily from 4:30-6:00 PM (all 3 grades).
- Practice locations: we are allowed to drop the curtain, and that
counts as a separate gym. HOWEVER, we need all kids to enter and exit
from different doors so that they aren't mixing cohorts. I will send
out a map next week of which doors your child should enter and exit
from practice every day
-Masks: Masks will need to be worn AT ALL TIMES by players and
coaches. We are STRONGLY encouraging bringing water bottles WITH
straws so that they can put the straw under the mask. Because
otherwise, they need to leave the gym to even take a drink.
- Spectators: Larimer county has not allowed ANY spectators, so we
will not have any spectators at home games. HOWEVER, Weld county HAS
approved 2 spectators per player. 2 schools in our league (Windsor and
Severance) are in Weld County, so if your child's team has an away
game at one of those schools, we will be giving each player 2 tickets
to give to anyone in their family they would like to attend. Because
we will not be allowed to have spectators, we are working with the
district on how to put the games on Facebook live so that you can
watch.
-Transportation: there will be NO transportation provided for any
games this year because of the protocols drivers are needing to use to
clean their busses after and in between routes. If your child is the
first game playing, you will be expected to get your child to the game
location by 4:15 PM. if your game is the second game, you will be
expected to get your child to the game location by 6:00. You will have
to wait in your car until you are signaled by your coach or athletic
director that your child can come in.
-Gym cleaning: there will be 30 minutes in between games (from the
moment there are no people in the gym) set aside to clean the gym
between games. This means when your game is finished, your child needs
to leave as soon as possible so we can get the next game going.
-6th grade games: Some of these games may be at a location of a team
that isn't your opponent (example: Turner vs. Bill Reed @ Walt Clark).
This is because as a league, we had to consolidate locations to try
and get refs at every game. So double check the location of EVERY game
to get your student to the right location.
Wrestling:
-We will start on 1/19 at TMS. The variance is for the 18th, but that
is a holiday, so we are going on the 19th
- We are allowed to have NO MORE than 25 students on the mat at any time.
- Practice times! For tryout week, if we get more than 25 kids trying
out at any given grade level, we will have to split tryouts into
different time slots.
After tryouts, if your child was one of the final 25,
we will practice after school daily from 4:30-6:00 PM (all 3 grades).
- Practice locations: we are allowed to drop the curtain, and that
counts as a separate gym. HOWEVER, we need all kids to enter and exit
from different doors so that they aren't mixing cohorts. I will send
out a map next week of which doors your child should enter and exit
from practice every day
-Masks: Masks will need to be worn AT ALL TIMES by players and
coaches. The ONLY exception is during 1 on 1 grappling. We are
STRONGLY encouraging bringing water bottles WITH straws so that they
can put the straw under the mask. Because otherwise, they need to
leave the gym to even take a drink.
- Spectators: Larimer county has not allowed ANY spectators, so we
will not have any spectators at home games. HOWEVER, Weld county HAS
approved 2 spectators per player. 2 schools in our league (Windsor and

to give to anyone in their family they would like to attend. Because
we will not be allowed to have spectators, we are working with the
district on how to put the games on Facebook live so that you can
watch.
-Shifts: we will be hosting meets in 2 separate "shifts." First shift
will be lightweights, and second will be heavyweights. This is because
we can only have 25 total at the mat. So when we are hosting a
different school, that means we can only have 12 of our kids by the
mat at any given time.
-Transportation: there will be NO transportation provided for any
games this year because of the protocols drivers are needing to use to
clean their busses after and in between routes. If your child is the
lightweight class, you will be expected to get your child to the game
location by 4:15 PM. if your child is in the heavyweight class, you
will be expected to get your child to the game location by 6:00. You
will have to wait in your car until you are signaled by your coach or
athletic director that your child can come in.
-Gym cleaning: there will be 30 minutes in between shifts (from the
moment there are no people in the gym) set aside to clean the gym
between shifts. This means when your shift is finished, your child
needs to leave as soon as possible so we can get the next shift going.
-JV matches: all students will not be allowed to wrestle more than 3
times per dual. So if your child is a JV wrestler, or if the other
school has a JV wrestler, your Varsity student may wrestle them to get
more practice.
