Curriculum Improvement Process

The Thompson School District considers curriculum to be a blending of standards, content, exploration and pathways, assessments, and a menu of appropriate instructional resources that support robust learning in our 21st Century world. Curriculum development includes the adoption, modification or deletion of specific programs or courses, the design and evaluation of proposed pilot programs or courses, and the selection of compatible and appropriate instructional materials.

The process of maintaining a relevant and up-to-date curriculum should be guided by the District mission, goals, strategic plan and graduation requirements, as well as by District standards and expectations for student achievement. The curriculum design process should embody a philosophy of continuous improvement, involve broad based input from different District constituencies, allow and encourage creativity and innovation, consider reliable and current educational research, provide for the fulfillment of varied student needs, and direct the selection of instructional materials. Evaluation shall be an integral and essential component of curriculum design.

  1. All major projects for curriculum change or innovation regardless of origin must be channeled through the proper EC-12 Content Council prior to review by the Curriculum Improvement Council (CIC). The Curriculum Improvement Council will then review, study and recommend to Learning Services. Principals and key teachers in the respective buildings must be involved prior to a decision of commitment to the project.
  2. Introduction of new courses or other major curriculum revision of course content must be recommended by the appropriate EC-12 Content Council in that subject area prior to review by the Curriculum Improvement Council. A decision will be made by the Curriculum Improvement Council either affirming the recommendation, rejecting it or modifying it.     The recommendation must be made in time for planning to implement it properly. Time required will depend upon the kind and significance as well as the timing of the changes recommended. Typically, new high courses need to be approved by the February CIC meeting in order to appear in the following year’s High School Course Guide.
  3. Adoption of new materials basic to the program such as textbooks or references in quantity must have approval prior to commitment by the appropriate EC-12 Content Council, building principal, Curriculum Improvement Council and Learning Services. This does not prevent a pilot in a single class if this has been the decision and understanding of the above groups as a whole.
  4. Once commitments for revisions have been made, it is the responsibility of the teachers and principals to implement them. Principals of each building will include necessary materials in planning the budget. Participation by teachers in professional learning or other staff training is necessary for implementation.
